近日讀了一篇訪問，對象是香港足總的精英發展教練Samuel Bensley ，內容相容有啟發性，尤其是這一席話：better education better football (源自英格蘭足總的口號)。足球青訓的理念，跟社會對於教育的理解是分不開的；而香港足球的水平未能更上一層樓，亦跟本地教育有很大的關係。
Samuel在訪問裏提及，在英國接受足球訓練的學童，會獲得球會和國家隊派人專責補習，以達致體學相長。對於他們的學業指導方針，是mentoring（指導）多於tutoring（補習）。而且，港英兩地年輕球員的特質差異，在於後者學習模式太直接，教練要令他們專注、守紀律，要刺激他們的學習動機；而英國球員以職業球員為前提，不用解決自律問題，所以教練只須從旁循循善誘、引發他們自行思考解決問題的方式。
這不是人種和地域的差異，是兩地教育制度和理念的差異。在平日學校教育以外，香港學生的課業、補習的確擠佔不少時間—刺激學習動機已經花上很多時間，還要追上學習進度。補習、趕學業很費時，練波踢波亦費時，家長在體、學之間，不得不取捨。無怪乎香港青訓發展到青少年階段，就會流失不少球員。負責灣仔地區青訓的陳浩然也曾說過：「U10、U12的人數是多，但一到考試年齡如U16人數就很緊拙，有時人數連一隊都不夠。」
面對時間的拉扯，改變學習模式或許是一條出路——不論是課業抑或足球。孩子需要的，是建立一套具備mentoring的學習文化。即使不可以在固定的空間和時間接受訓練，但是mentor和學生建立恆常緊密的溝通，可以共同訂下長遠學習目標，以及自主學習的風氣。
